St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is finished for the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee – the same injury to the same knee as the one that cut short his 2013 season – Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Sunday.
“Unfortunately, I can confirm that we have lost Sam for the year,” Fisher said in a news conference. “Sam suffered an injury to the reconstructed knee that he had done last season, a year ago. And very, disappointed for Sam. … We lost our starting quarterback, but for Sam personally it’s devastating.
The first overall pick of the 2010 draft suffered the injury on the opening drive of Saturday night’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns when Browns defensive end Armonty Bryant rolled into his left leg. Bradford was seen in the locker room walking, albeit with a limp under his own power.
Initially, there was optimism he had not re-injured the ACL. Additional tests showed it was torn.
“It’s just highly unusual,” Fisher said of Bradford re-injuring the knee. “It wasn’t a high impact. … They’re all different. And this was just kind of a hyperextension with the knee. You just had the impact from the outside and the knee was locked and something has to give. Unfortunately, the ACL gave.”
The team will now turn to 13th-year journeyman Shaun Hill, who is 13-13 for his career as a starter.
“So we move forward as a football team,” Fisher said. “Shaun is our guy. We brought him here. He’s got experience. We’ve got all the confidence in the world in him.”
