NASCAR Charlotte 2014: Trevor Bayne moves to Sprint Cup …

Trevor Bayne will drive a Sprint Cup car full-time for Roush Fenway Racing next season. Still to be decided: what the rest of the team will look like.

Roush Fenway Racing cleared up a bit of its cloudy future Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, while also hinting significant changes could be ahead.

The biggest news was the promotion of Nationwide Series driver Trevor Bayne to the Sprint Cup beginning in 2015. Bayne will be behind the wheel of the No. 6 car with full backing from AdvoCare, his current Nationwide sponsor.

Bayne will be no rookie, having made a total of 50 starts in NASCAR’s top division. The 23-year-old burst onto the scene in 2011, winning the Daytona 500 in just his second race for the famed Wood Brothers Racing team, but due to a lack of sponsorship he has never run a full Cup schedule.

“This is something I’ve waited on since I was five years old,” Bayne said. “… But the person that I wanted to thank the most in this room is Jack Roush for standing behind me over the last four years now. We’ve been through a lot of ups-and-downs, but he and his organization from day one has said our goal was to get to Sprint Cup.”
