David Wilson’s career is over due to neck condition, NY Giants running back said, ‘I lived my dream’

He’d been optimistic through every step of his comeback, returning to the field barely seven months after neck surgery, flashing his trademark game-breaking speed and infectious smile, taking hits and bouncing right back up.

So somehow, on Monday, David Wilson found a way to be optimistic in the face of the heartbreaking reality. His comeback — and his football career — came to an abrupt end when doctors advised him to walk away.

“I lived my dream,” Wilson said. “A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too.”

Wilson, just 23, met with Dr. Frank Cammisa and Giants team doctor Russell Warren Monday morning and was diagnosed with diffuse cervical stenosis, a congenital narrowing of the entire spinal column and a condition that would forever leave him at risk on the football field.

It was the news that the team had expected since last week, sources said. The third-year running back had suffered a “burner” in practice last Tuesday, losing feeling in his hands and lower extremities.
