One thing forgotten—or acutely remembered, depending on your point of view—in the immediate aftermath of the incident was the fact that the two were on a media tour and still had a raft of interviews to conduct in promotion of their main event light heavyweight clash at UFC 178.

One of those interviews came on ESPN shortly after the brawl and offered a forum for champion and challenger to continue the sniping (though the fact that they were in separate locations kept them from renewing their physical beef). But it still wasn’t over there. This feud, for now visible like the Big Dipper in the sporting sky, once again flared up on Fox Sports Live.

Ronda Rousey’s 16-second knockout victory against Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on Saturday piqued the interest of someone in the UFC’s production truck.

During the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s ceremonial post-fight interview, the women’s bantamweight champion was asked by color commentator Joe Rogan if she would be interested in making a three-week turnaround in order to headline UFC 176, which takes place in Los Angeles, on Aug. 2.

At the time, Rousey explained she already had minor knee surgery scheduled, but would evaluate her options and make a more informed decision later. But, at the conclusion of the pay-per-view, it was revealed that “Rowdy” had suffered an injury to her right index finger that required nine stitches, thus making her possible inclusion at UFC 176 seem far-fetched.

At the post-fight press conference, Rousey described what she has on her plate in the near future.

“I developed a cyst under my knuckle,” Rousey explained. “I kept dismissing it, and I ripped it open on the first overhand right.”

The Olympian went on to add that the aforementioned knee surgery is “more maintenance” than anything and ultimately is a procedure she will walk away from.

LAS VEGAS — Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn retired from professional mixed martial arts at the age of 35 on Sunday.

Widely considered the best lightweight of all time, Penn announced his retirement following a third-round TKO loss to Frankie Edgar at “The Ultimate Fighter” finale.

Prior to the loss, Penn (16-10-2) had not fought since dropping a lopsided unanimous decision to Rory MacDonald in December 2012. The intrigue of a third fight with Edgar, whom he had twice lost to previously, talked Penn back into competition in 2014.

After losing to Edgar (17-4-1) for the third consecutive time, Penn said he knew it was time to hang up his gloves.

“This is the end,” Penn said. “I’m thinking to myself, ‘Why did you step back in the Octagon after the beating Rory MacDonald gave you?’ The reason is I really needed to find out. If I didn’t make this night happen, I would have always wondered.

“I would have complained to everyone, ‘I could have done it again! I could have done it again!’ Now, I know for sure that I can’t.”

Penn remains one of only two fighters in UFC history to win titles in multiple weight classes. He won the UFC 170-pound title by submitting Matt Hughes at UFC 46 in January 2004. Four years later, Penn added the 155-pound title to his résumé in a submission victory over Joe Stevenson at UFC 80. He defended that title three times.

Penn, this was hardly the best way to go out as Frankie Edgar put on a clinic against Penn in the main event at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday night.

Penn opened the bout literally on the balls of his feet and Edgar began with what he normally does, lots of movement with jabs and other assorted offense. Edgar managed to score a takedown early with Penn using variations of open and butterfly guard. Edgar was three times able to stand out of it and dive back in, but didn’t land anything significant with a diving entry back into Penn’s guard. Edgar was also content to beat up the legs of a Penn content to lay on his back.
