KITZBUEHEL, Austria Norwegian skier Kjetil Jansrud won a shortened version of the classic men’s World Cup downhill on the Streif course on Saturday.

Fog on the upper part of the course forced organizers to delay the race by two hours, and then significantly lower the start gate as conditions failed to improve.

In the shortest downhill in World Cup history, Jansrud clocked 58.16 seconds — half the time usually needed on the 3.3-kilometer (2-mile) course — to edge Dominik Paris by 0.02. The Italian won the super-G on the same course Friday.

Guillermo Fayed of France came 0.21 behind in third.

“‘Kitzbuehel champion’ sounds really cool,” Jansrud said. “I wasn’t happy that we started from the Seidlalm as my best part is the upper part of the hill. It’s an amazing day, a huge victory for me.”

With this third downhill win of the season, Jansrud became the first Norwegian winner on the Streif since Lasse Kjus 11 years ago.

The Norwegian closed the gap on overall World Cup leader Marcel Hirscher, who doesn’t compete in downhill, to 82 points. However, the Austrian has two slaloms coming up — in Kitzbuehel on Sunday and nearby Schladming on Tuesday — to extend his lead.

Paris came just short of his second win in two days.

“Those two-hundredths annoy me a bit,” said the Italian, who won the downhill two years ago. “But it’s great to be on the podium. The race was great. Even with the shorter run, it was a fair race.”

American Steven Nyman, who won the downhill in Val Gardena last month, was 0.41 back in fifth, and Olympic champion Matthias Mayer of Austria trailed Jansrud by 0.47 in 10th.

Last year’s winner Hannes Reichelt of Austria finished 1.23 off the lead and shared 34th with Swiss skiers Mauro Caviezel and 2009 winner and 2010 Olympic champion, Didier Defago, who raced the Streif for the last time before retiring at the end of the season.

Foggy clouds hanging over the top section of the course limited visibility, making it potentially dangerous for skiers who reach speeds of up to 140 kph (90 mph).

Count Matthew Stafford among those in disbelief over the officials’ reversed pass interference call Sunday during the Detroit Lions’ 24-20 NFC wild-card loss in Dallas.

The Lions quarterback was mic’d up during the game, and his heated take on the play aired Tuesday night on Showtime’s “Inside the NFL.” Stafford was just as confused and as angry as every Lions fan watching at home after the officials mysteriously picked up the flag following a pass interference call against the Cowboys without providing an explanation to the crowd.

“That’s unbelievable . . . and you know it,” Stafford said to an official, via Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. “You know it is, though . . . How does that get overturned? . . . Congratulations. It’s unbelievable.”

After fuming and yelling on the sideline for a few moments, Stafford asked a referee for an explanation of what just happened, but it did nothing to make the QB feel better.

More from Stafford: “Can we explain that or no? Just flat-out overturning a pass interference call?” An official then mentioned face guarding to Stafford, and the quarterback responded: “I understand, but your man saw it and threw a penalty. … I understand that. … But I’ve never in the history seen one turned over. Congratulations, man. First time in history that’s happened.”

An angry Hamlin tossed his HANS safety device at Harvick’s car as he came back around the track.

“I just wish I had some sort of car left so I could show him the favor back,” Hamlin said of Harvick. “We’re not even halfway, we’re racing for the lead – it’s just a misjudgment.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he wasn’t sure how the wreck started.

“The first thing I saw was (Hamlin) hitting the inside wall. There was a little bit of smoke so it was tough to judge the speed of his car coming back up the track,” he said. “I thought I could go around the top and be alright, but I guessed wrong.”

Tom Osborne understands the awesome responsibility of being a member of the first College Football Playoff selection committee.

Someone blew up his mailbox.

“Blown apart after an Oklahoma game,” Nebraska’s legendary coach said. “Probably would have been the late 70s.”

Osborne certainly had his issues with Barry Switzer — a 5-12 head-to-head record — none of them were personal.

“No, Barry wouldn’t do that,” Osborne added. “You just viewed it [fan reaction] as part of the territory. Most fans don’t blow your mailbox up [but] you’d leave the phone off the hook at night or pull the shades.”

Pulled shades have become home security alarms. Land lines are now smart phones. If a Hall of Fame coach at the top of his game is concerned about harassment 35 years ago, what does the playoff era have in store?

We’re less than four weeks from kicking off the most interesting season in history. In a sense, there’s more certainty to a Wallenda tight-roping without a net.

At the center of it is fan interest that helped make college football the nation’s second-most popular sport in the BCS era. In fact, it’s why we have a playoff in the first place. The 10 FBS commissioners finally caved to public pressure and the inadequacies of the BCS.

The fans have spoken. Now, how do you keep them in check? It’s a modest but powerful four-team playoff. You can read the parameters here. But none of the bullet points answer an overarching question before the season kicks off: How long before we get to eight?

That’s another way of saying we don’t know what we don’t know in this new era. For the first time that 13-member committee will select and seed the four playoff teams as well as place the schools in the other four New Year’s Six bowls.

Basketball fans are already bracing for The Decision 2, and hundreds of fans on Twitter are threatening to burn their Miami jerseys — but that sort of reaction is premature. Opting out was just a smart business decision.

There are two really important things to keep in mind:
